Program Description:
The PhD in Design aims to create a multidisciplinary research environment based on design principles for students who would like to carry out research on issues underlying the nature and practice of design. In other words, it aims to generate new knowledge about the nature of design and designing, and to enhance traditional sensitivities arising out of a daily design approach by combining these with contemporary requirements and technologies. Moreover, the program has objectives to promote such sensitivities with manifestation in theoretical thinking and practical methodologies. It enables students to improve their strategical, creative, intellectual, personal and interpersonal skills with must and elective courses which are discussing current theory and applications through discussion topics and researches.
Admission:
Applicants are required to have a master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in design, architecture or a related field of design.
Applicants are expected to be fluent in written and oral English in order to be admitted to the program. All non-native speakers of English are required to submit proof of English-language proficiency.
Turkish applicants should take the ALES and must satisfy the announced minimum requirements. Applicants who are not Turkish citizens and Turkish citizen applicants who are residents of a foreign country may take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) instead of the ALES.
A “Statement of Purpose” indicating research interests is required.
Admittance to the program is also determined through a written exam and an interview given before the beginning of each academic year.
Degree Requirements:
The program requires successful completion of at least 21 credits of coursework (7 courses) in two successive semesters. After completion of the courses, the PhD candidates must take the seminar course in their area of interest and a qualifying examination. The PhD candidates make a presentation related to their thesis and submit a thesis proposal that will be evaluated by a jury in the relevant field. Upon a favorable evaluation by the jury, the candidate will qualify for work towards a PhD dissertation. At the completion of the dissertation, a similar jury will examine the dissertation and the candidate for a final decision on the degree. Students graduate with 240 ECTS. The duration of the program is eight semesters.
